African trade bead Necklace
Dotts
These true African trade beads are made of artfully fashioned powder glass.
All the steps of making these beads are performed by hand. Recovered glass is broken into fragments to make translucent beads or reduced to fine powder with a pestle to make opaque beads. The glass (in fragments or powder) is placed in a clay mold and melted in a traditional oven. After demolding and cooling, the beads are painted with a water-based paste and colored glass powder, applied with a cassava stalk. The beads are then cooked a second time to fix the colors. Polishing is done by rubbing the beads together with sand and water on a smooth stone.
These treasures have been lovingly collected over the years, now reimagined in contemporary designs. Embrace the uniqueness of each piece, as there's only one of each available. Discover the beauty of history reimagined.
